Yulieski Gourriel is a 32 year old Cuban infielder who was one of the most prolific hitters in the history of the tiny Caribbean island. Mets outfielder Yoenis Cespedes recently called him “the best player in Cuba.”
Over 15 seasons between Cuba and Japan, Gourriel batted .335 with 250 HR. In 2015, he batted .500 (!!) over 49 games with 15 HR. He is said to be a Yankee fan and close friends with closer Aroldis Chapman.
Does he fit, though?
Primarily a 3B, he could displace Chase Headley to 1B, but with Mark Teixeira returning next week, this would create a logjam.
Would Gourriel be open to DH or RF? Could he play 2B, and move Castro to 3B, allowing the Yankees to use Headley as the 1b backup? Right now, there are many scenarios that could possibly work, it is just a matter of how badly the Yankees want him, and how much he wants to be a New York Yankee.
